The Built Environment Thesis

This project studies how physical environments become meaningful through participation, continuity, care, and shared responsibility. It asks what kinds of structures make environmental authorship genuinely possible in ordinary life.

How can we intentionally design and steward physical environments that enable individuals, families, organizations, and communities to flourish over time?

  • Environment creation is a continuous act rather than a sequence of disconnected industries.
  • Meaning, beauty, and identity emerge through participation, continuity, and lived relation with place.
  • Stewardship is a practical bridge between human life and the environments people inhabit over time.
  • Loss of authorship in the built environment has material, civic, and existential consequences.

Current focus

  • Chapter 4 is complete.
  • The working draft is moving forward from Chapter 5.
  • Recent work centers environmental authorship, stewardship, and the conditions that make participation durable.
